Bo Staff Form
Clock angles are all from your original position.
When holding the staff your hands are roughly 1/3 of the way from the end of
the staff on either end so the staff is divided into 3 equal pieces. The
staff is held with 2 hands unless otherwise mentioned.
When holding the staff at your side in this form, the opposite hand is always
on top, i.e. when the staff is vertical (parallel to your body) on your left
side, your right hand is up and your left hand is down on the staff.
During this form, your hands must constantly adjust to the position of the staff.
- Opening: Raise the staff to your shoulders then move down onto your
right knee as you place the staff on the ground. Stand back up in an
attention stance and do the short salutation. As you do the salutation,
scoop up the staff with your left foot and kick the staff up into your
arms with your right foot as you come to an attention stance holding
the staff at your waist.
- Block high, block low, turn the staff vertical to block to your left,
then turn the staff the opposite way to block to your right.
- As you step back into a left neutral bow, twirl the staff down so your
left hand comes under your right arm, striking forward from above with
the staff.
- Reverse that motion so that your left hand comes up to your right
shoulder, striking forward from below with the staff.
- Slide up to an attention stance (transition only) as you twirl the
staff with your left hand down in front of you and step back into a
right neutral bow and finish circling the staff so that your right hand
is under your left arm, striking forward from above with the staff.
- Reverse that motion so that your right hand comes up to your left
shoulder, striking forward from below with the staff.

- Closing: Drop the staff as you extend both of your arms, catching it in
the bend of each elbow (the staff is now lying across your arms) and do
the short salutation. Quickly straighten out your arms to flip the
staff into the air, catch it with both hands, bring your left hand
down and under your right arm to twirl the staff into a vertical
position under your right arm.
